I believe that this poem does not include a set answer of the meaning, I think that it has a different meanings due to the way you analyse or read this poem. To me this poem includes a young girl called vaudevue who’s mind and memories have been wiped by a armed force or some sort of harmful group. Obviously from this you can gather that the poem is written in context to the future.

After this group has erased the memory of this young girl she tries to gather up the strength to move on without any idea of where or what she is doing (due to the memory loss). So she rises and ‘staggers’ through miles of rutted meadow to the margin of a lake, which is described as adorable. She strips of her uniform and plunges into the Icy lake. The moons reflection shines bright on the lake as she swims innocently through the water. As she swims an undercurrent covers her head, seizing her body.

Unknowing this young girl is in the process of drowning a solider from the group which took all memories from the girl spots her uniform which she previously striped off. He waits for this girl to appear but nothing.

The last stanza describes the death of Vaudevue, I believe it describes this because of the terms it uses, ‘sleeps on, stirs not’ this tells me that the young girl is sleeping with no movement.
